Bukovinian State Medical University (BSMU) is 73 years old Government university and one of the largest higher educational establishments of Chernivtsi. It has recently celebrated the 65th anniversary of its foundation. Bukovinian State Medical University is a modern multistructural educational institution of the highest level of accreditation with ancient traditions – It was founded in October 1944.
Bukovinian State Medical Universitry is included in the general register of the WHO, Magna Charta Universitatum (Bologna, Italy), the Association of the Carpathian Region Universities which provides qualified training according to the grade system of education.
Bukovinian State Medical University is located in the magnificent core of Chernovtsy-city. This beautiful city with inimitable architecture, museums, shady alleys in its parks and public gardens, summer cafes which can be found literally round every corner attracts tourists and students from across the country and abroad. They come to admire the past and the present which blend so harmoniously together in our historical city established in 1408.City in quiet, inexpensive and very comfortable for living and every 5th person is a student from one of its numerous educational institutions.
Bukovinian State Medical University takes its proper place on the European level. Nowadays it is a recognized member of the International Association of Educational Universities (IAEU), World Health Organization (WHO), the Association of Carpathian Region Universities (ACRU) and of the Great Charter of Universities. For active implementation of pedagogical novelties and new educational technologies, the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine awarded the University with the Diploma of the Third International Exhibition of Educational Institutions “Contemporary Education in Ukraine-2000” in March, 2000. In August, 2001, the University was awarded, as a prize-winner in the nomination “10 years of Ukrainian independence”, with the Diploma “International Academic Popularity and Quality Rate “The Golden Fortune”. In October, 2001 the Ministry of Public Health of Ukraine awarded the University with the Diploma for the third place in the state rating of higher medical (pharmaceutical) educational institutions of the III-IV accreditation levels in 2000/2001 academic year in the nomination “Scientific Activities”. The University cooperates with educational establishments and researchers of Austria, Germany, the USA, Canada, Sweden, the Netherlands, France, Romania, Russia, Bulgaria, Poland, the United Kingdom and others. Doctors for the neighboring and distant countries are being trained at the University. 4000 students study at the University now, 618 of them are foreign citizens from 28 countries. They have been taught since 1994, and since 2004 English has been introduced as the language of instruction for international students.
At present 78 Doctors of Science, 324 Candidates of Science, 66 Professors and more than 193 Assistant Professors (PhD) work fruitfully at 47 Departments of the Medical University. Among them there are Member of the Academy of Pedagogical Sciences of Ukraine, numerous Honoured Science and Education Workers, Full Members of New York Academy of Medical Sciences. The researches of the University have attained considerable achievements in the fields of cardiology, traumatology and orthopedics, gastroenterology, pediatrics, kidney physiology and pathology. More than 100 of faculties’ staff have gone to countries of Asia, Africa and Central America at different times and worked in various higher medical institutions; they have a good command of foreign languages and rich experience working with students from abroad.
Over the years of its existence (1944-2012) the University has trained about 25 000 specialists including the following specialties: “General Medicine” – 19141, “Pediatrics” – 469, “Medical Psychology” – 202, “Stomatology” – 200, “Clinical Pharmacy” – 392, “Pharmacy” – 41

Today Bukovinian State Medical University as a high medical school with great experience in training of medical and scientific personnel has a license for the foreign citizens’ education both undergraduate and postgraduate. There are Medical faculties in specialties:
- General medicine, Pediatrics, Medical Psychology, Clinical Pharmacology;
- Faculty of Post-Graduate Education (clinical residency, fellowships, PhD programs);
- Preparatory Faculty intended for Teaching Russian to foreign students;
- Faculty for Bachelors and Junior Medical and Pharmaceutical Workers in specialties: Nursing, Pharmacy, Laboratory Diagnostics
The foundation and development of BSMU are connected with the names of well-known scientists and organizers. The University graduates fulfil themselves in the medical, pharmaceutical, economical, educational, scientific, social and cultural spheres. BSMU is proud of its graduates who have achieved in professional and public life. There are many famous artists, state and public figures among the University graduates: the Deputy Minister of Public Health of Ukraine V.G.Bidny; the Director of L.I.Medvid Ukrainian Institute of Ecology and Hygiene, a Corresponding Member of the National Academy of Medical Science M.G.Prodanchuk; the Director of the Institute of Traumatology and Orthopedics of the National Academy of Medical Science, a Corresponding Member of the Academy of Medical Science of Ukraine G.V.Gayko; the Director of O.S.Kolomiychenko Institute of Otorhinolaryngology, Academician of the National Academy of Medical Science of Ukraine D.I.Zabolotny; Academicians of the National Academy of Medical Science D.D.Zerbino and Yu.P.Spizhenko. Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of Ukraine in India (1992-1999), Professor G.I.Khodorovsky was elected a deputy to the Verkhovna Rada (Supreme Council) of Ukraine. Two University graduates became T.G.Shevchenko State Prize-Winners: the prominent Ukrainian poet, People’s Artist of Ukraine Mykhaylo Tkach, and the famous composer, the Hero of Ukraine, Volodymyr Ivasiuk.
The students’ campus consists of 5 comfortable hostels connected to Internet with high conditions of life with reading rooms and sports gymnasia – everything necessary for studying and rest. For the development of creative abilities and rest of the students the Palace “Academichny” is functioning actively. On its basis various clubs and studios are organized: in particular, an art studio, decorative and applied arts and photo studios, the amateur ensemble of folk dance and song “Trembita”, drama and choreographic studios, etc.
Sports clubs in volleyball, basketball, wrestling, table tennis, chess, athletics, mini-football are available for the students. Students get a real pleasure at the University summer sports and fitness camp “Health” located on the bank of the Dniester River
