Reasons to Study in China
8 is considered to be a lucky number in Chinese culture. This is because it is pronounced “ba” sounds similar to “fa”, meaning to prosper. The 2008 Beijing Olympics started on the 8th of August (08/08/08) for this reason.Here are 8 reasons to study in China:
- Get a better education
Chinese Universities are internationalizing, China is now Asia’s education hub and one of the top 3 global education hubs. With numbers rising each year, there are expected to be over 500,000 international students by 2020.

Did you know that there are over 5,000 University courses taught in English in China?From semester, to undergraduate, master’s and PhD programs at top Chinese Universities.
With high class education and rapidly developing institutions, Chinese Universities are climbing up the international rankings, international students can benefit from leading professors and teaching quality. But as any employer will tell you (see later points) education is much more than that; it is the relationships you make, the life experience of living and exploring another culture.
Chinese culture is over 5000 years old, and was for a long time the leading economy in the world, producing great scientists and inventions such as paper, gunpowder, printing and the compass. There is a great deal we can learn from China and Chinese culture, and ideas that we can share across cultures that can make us more effective in our studies and career. And did you know that studying abroad in another culture makes you more creative?
2) – Save money – don’t graduate with so much student debt!
With the comparatively low tuition fees and living costs, studying in China can often be cheaper than studying in your home country, students from US or Europe can save a substantial amount of money. As an example, the subway in Beijing costs 2 RMB for each trip, and you can buy a beer for the same price (the cost of text books are low too).

Studying in China will make you more employable in two ways:

With China’s growing economy, now the second largest economy in the world, and the most populous country in the world, the centre of economic gravity is shifting east. China is one of the most beautiful countries in the world, and if you are studying in China you can take trips in the holidays. Climb the Great Wall of China, ride camels in the desert down the silk road, take a boat down the Yangtze, see the Hanging temple of Datong. Explore the beautiful scenery in the different parts of China.
6) Learn Chinese
Learn Chinese in China – pick up Chinese, a new skill, there are more Chinese speakers in the world than any other language, and being able to speak Chinese allows you to communicate with Chinese speakers which is great for travelling in China, business, and your career, literally opening the door to a whole new world of opportunities.There are many other benefits to learning Chinese. It gives an insight into Chinese culture, and understanding Chinese thinking which helps to broaden the mind. There are reports that learning Chinese can make you more intelligent.
7) Broaden your network
Chinese people are generally warm, friendly and welcoming to foreigners. Broaden your network by building new relationships with Chinese and international people. If you plan on working in China in the future you will need to spend some time in China to develop some connections (guanxi), studying in China will give you the opportunity to build connections with your classmates (international and Chinese). Relationships are an important part of Chinese culture.

- Transcript applicable to Masters and PhD applicants.
